 MONASTERY VISITATION   (Visitation) – VILA DAS AVES

The Mr. José Maria de Almeida Garrett, connoisseur of the writings of St. Francis de Sales, asked the Porto Monastery a foundation in Vila das Aves. Having been the Porto Monastery founded earlier, had not sisters in sufficient numbers to make this request, so some youth from Vila Aves willing to give themselves to the contemplative life, were received this monastery, and then be part of the future foundation . This came to take place on 2 October 1887 and was Superior Sister Maria Vicente Galvão de Albuquerque.
Like the other two monasteries, the Vila Aves  Monastery was responsible a flourishing boarding school, which functioned until the establishment of the Republic in 1910, when the community was expatriate, distributing by Monasteries of the Order in Spain and France. In 1914, met again the community in Elorrio, Spain. In 1923 he moved to Tuy, and in 1927 to Vigo. In 1931, as a result of the civil war, he returned to his monastery in Portugal, which has managed to retain possession. In 1953, special circumstances led the community to transferring to Coimbra, and the monastery Vilas Aves was sold to the Poor Clare Sisters. Again the circumstances did have a new direction, this time the final return to Vila das Aves, building up to this end, a new monastery. The sisters were returning in groups until complete the transfer of the entire community on July 15, 1964.
